Background and History

The Populus and Salix Clone Directory for Canada is a searchable, electronic database containing poplar and willow germplasm (pollen, seedlot, progeny or clone) data for Canada.  In one form or another, the directory, produced by the then Poplar Council of Canada (PCC), has been in existence for more than 30 years.  The original database was maintained in hard copy, last updated in that format in 1986.  In 2004, the Genetics and Breeding Working Group of PCC contracted with Paprican to transfer the 1986 database to electronic format and also to add approximately 1000 new entries provided by forest companies, governments and private industry, for a total of over 6600 entries.  During this process, a Microsoft Excel template was developed for all new entries to be added to the clone directory. The amalgamated databases were converted to SQL format and made available on the website of the Poplar and Willow Council of Canada.  In 2012, the Council launched a new, updated website with which the Access format of the database was not compatible.  After a couple of years of maintaining two websites so the database could remain accessible, the old site was abandoned and, with it, access to the database.  Over the period 2015 to 2018, the Genetics and Breeding Working Group of the now Poplar and Willow Council of Canada worked to update and revise the database and with the help of Sencia Canada Ltd. the Populus and Salix Clone Directory for Canada is once again available to members on the Council’s website in Microsoft Access format.

The Data

The database now includes a total of 26,419 records, organized under 25 searchable column headings.  These headings are listed and described in the attached table.

Many organizations have contributed data to the Directory and their kind agreement to make the information available in this format is gratefully acknowledged.  Contributing organizations are listed in the attached table as well as with the individual records in the database.
