Poplar
Science

In the coming months and years the Poplar Council
of Canada intends to develop and maintain a growing collection
of information on poplar and willow science and scientists in
Canada.

Poplar Research
Summaries of current poplar research studies across
the regions of Canada were presented at the August 2001 annual
meeting of the Poplar Council. These will soon be available through
this site. Come back and visit us again soon.
The 2001 annual meeting also developed a series
of research needs for poplar and aspen in Canada, particularly
in light of the possibility of significantly increased programs
of plantation establishment in the near future. Click
here to view the list of poplar research
needs.
Ultimately, with the help of our Provincial and
University representatives, the Poplar Council plans to develop
and make available through this site, a much more complete compilation
of information on current and recently-completed poplar and willow
research in Canada. You can help us achieve that goal by contacting
the Poplar Council with information about poplar or willow
studies in which you are involved or about which you know. Study
outlines, publication citations and related URLs are all welcome
as we try to build our Canadian poplar science information service.

Poplar
and Willow Scientists
The Canadian Forest Service has established a Canadian
Forestry Researchers Directory which provides information
on the research fields and interests of forestry scientists, as
well as contact information. The directory currently includes
almost 40 poplar and willow scientists who can be found by entering
'Populus' and/or 'Salix' in the species field in the search form.
Construction and expansion of the directory is dependent on self-input
by scientists. If you are a poplar or willow scientist and are
not already registered in the Directory, why not take a few moments
now to visit the site at http://www.pfc.cfs.nrcan.gc.ca/cfrd/poplar_e.html
and input your data.
The Poplar Council hopes that the poplar and willow
scientist content of the Directory can become much more comprehensive
and complete, creating a valuable networking tool.

Poplar
Council Working Groups
The Poplar Council has established a series of
Working Groups to address specific scientific and technical issues.
There are presently 2 active Working Groups dealing with Genetics
and Breeding, and with Pesticides.
The Genetics and Breeding Working Group
is tasked with assessing the need for work on design of clonal
trials for field testing, listing and describing existing trial
sites, and analysis of current status and future needs of poplar
and willow breeding activities in Canada. For information on the
Working Group's current activity, click
here.
The Pesticide Working Group is making efforts
to enhance the availability of pesticides for use in poplar and
willow cultivation through monitoring of pesticide registration
information and liaison with the Pest Management Regulatory Agency
(the federal government agency responsible for pesticide registration).
For information about the Working Group's current activity, click
here.
The Disease Working Group is a
sub-group of the Pesticide Working Group with a particular interest
in establishing identification services with standardized protocols
for poplar and willow diseases. For information about the Group's
current activity, click here.
Contact information for each of the Working Groups
is provided in the About PCC
section of this website.

Genomics to Production Workshop
Concern about the need to build bridges between
players in poplar genomics and poplar breeders and growers in
order to realize the full potential of recent developments in
poplar genomics led to the Genomics to Production (G2P) workshop
being convened by the Poplar Council of Canada (PCC) April 7-8,
2005. Participation in the Edmonton workshop was by invitation
and included 30 people from industry, government and academia.
The event was organized by Brian Ellis of UBC, Barb Thomas of
Genstat Consulting and John Doornbos, Chair of PCC. The objectives
were to understand the potential deliverables and limitations
of having the poplar genome sequence available; to understand
the commercial needs and challenges in poplar utilization today;
to develop a strategy for bringing these genome-associated products
and tools into operational use; to develop a list of contacts
across disciplines and sectors; and to develop a glossary of terminology
for poplar genomics, genetics and utilization.
The following workshop materials are available
on this website:
As a follow-up to the workshop, Poplar Council
has prepared and published a 'white paper' to stimulate further
discussion:
The Glossary of Terminology
for poplar genomics, genetics and utilization is also available
(in PDF).
