Pesticide Working Group

BACKGROUND

The Pesticide Working Group (PWG) of the Poplar Council of Canada (PCC) strives to expand the number of approved agricultural pesticides for use in ‘short-rotation-intensive-culture’ (SRIC) poplar and willow crops and acts as sponsor of these requests. Founded in 2003 as the Herbicide Working Group (HWG), its focus was SRIC poplar, including its hybrids. A few years later it became apparent that the working group's focus needed to include other pesticides besides just herbicides and there was a need to include SRIC willow as a crop to reflect the increasing interest in willow as a crop; willow was already part of the PCC mandate. The name of the Working Group changed to Pesticide Working Group (PWG), even though the main focus is still currently on herbicides.

The objective of the PWG is two-fold: To look at the range of pesticides currently available that are appropriate for use on poplars and willows, but not currently registered for this use, and to get the appropriate pesticides registered for use in SRIC poplar and willow crops.

The application process is known as User Requested Minor Use Label Expansion (URMULE) and is administered by the Pest Management Regulatory Agency - PMRA (Agence de réglementation de la lutte antiparasitaire - ARLA), operated by Health Canada. More information on the process can be viewed in the following '2011 Report of the Pesticide Working Group (PWG)' under the heading 'URMULE process', or by referring to the Health Canada website:

Disease Working Group

The Disease Working Group is a sub-group of the Pesticide Working Group. It has 2 primary objectives:

  1. To establish a network of pathology labs across Canada able to provide disease identification services to the exact species level, using DNA technology where required. This service will be offered on a ‘fee-for-service’ basis to poplar and willow growers, breeders etc.
  2. To ensure disease identification methodology for poplar and willow uses standardized protocols and results meet certain quality standards.
