Canadian
Forests Homepage
Canadian
Forests is a private non-profit initiative on the Internet
undertaken by Elizabeth Ruiz, editor, and John Roper, a forestry
consultant based in Vancouver, British Columbia. The site is intended
to facilitate access by Internet users to the growing number of
sites that provide information on forests and forestry in Canada.

Canadian
Forest Service
The Canadian
Forest Service of Natural Resources Canada is the primary
federal government agency concerned with forestry and forest science.
It aims to promote the sustainable development of Canada's forests
and the competitiveness of the Canadian forest sector for the
well-being of present and future generations of Canadians. The
website provides news about CFS and Canadian forestry, describes
CFS science programs and activities, and lists available publications.

Clean
Energy Fund
Through Canada's Economic Action Plan, the Government of Canada
is taking action to ensure a healthy environment. The
Clean Energy Fund, administered by Natural Resources Canada is investing in
large-scale carbon capture and storage demonstration projects and smaller-scale
demonstration projects of renewable and alternative energy technologies.
The site provides details of projects funded under the program.

EcoENERGY Technology Initiative (ecoETI)
The Government of Canada's
ecoENERGY Technology Initiative will help in the search for long-term solutions
to reducing and eliminating air pollutants from energy production and use,
and thus creating a clean energy future for Canada.
The site provides details of projects funded under the program.

Canadian
Biomass Information Network (CBIN)
The Canadian Biomass Innovation Network (CBIN)
is a network of federal researchers, program managers, policy makers, and expert advisors
partnered with industry, academia, non-governmental organizations, other government levels
and the international community. The Network’s goal is to continually ensure the availability
of knowledge, technology and enabling policy required to support the development of a sustainable Canadian bioeconomy.
The site provides details of projects funded under the program.

Alberta Forest Genetics Resources Council
The Alberta
Forest Genetic Resources Council, advises the Minister of
Sustainable Resource Development on matters relating to the role
of genetics in the productivity, biodiversity and conservation
of Alberta's tree species. The Council seeks to establish a solid
foundation for the management of forest genetic resources in Alberta,
including the operational delivery of tree improvement programs
in the context of the principles of sustainable forest management.

Centre for Northern Agroforestry and Afforestation
The Vision of the
Centre for Northern Agroforestry and Afforestation, is to
advance a sustainable agroforestry industry that contributes to
developing better communities, a growing economy and a healthier
environment. Its website is designed to profile the research activities
of its working group, and provide useful information for landowners,
woodlot managers, forest management companies, government and
research organizations.

Ministère des Ressources
naturelles et de la Faune du Québec
Québec's forests make an important contribution
to economic activity in the province. The site of the Ministère
des Ressources naturelles et de la Faune du Québec explains
how the forests are developed and managed to ensure sustainable
development. The site contains data, information and reports that
describe the research, development, management and protection
activities in Québec's forests.

International Poplar Commission
The International
Poplar Commission is a subsidiary body of the Food and Agriculture
Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. For over 50 years it
has been promoting and coordinating the breeding, cultivation,
management and utilization of poplars and willows. There are 36
member countries throughout the world. IPC meets every 4 years
and Canada and the US hosted the last such meeting in 2000.

Canadian Institute

PlantWatch
'PlantWatch'
is part of a national NatureWatch series of volunteer monitoring
programs designed to help identify ecological changes that may
be affecting our environment. A joint venture between Nature Canada,
Environment Canada's Ecological Monitoring and Assessement Network
Coordinating Office (EMAN CO) and the University of Guelph, PlantWatch
enables "citizen scientist" to get involved by recording
and reporting flowering times for selected species, including
aspen poplar (Populus tremuloides L.) in their own area.

The Aspen Project
Trembling aspen is the most widely distributed
tree species in North America. Despite its ability to adapt to
disturbance, aspen is declining throughout much of its native
range. The Aspen Project
is a continuing research project at Oregon State University for
the study of trembling aspen and its decline in the western United
States.

Western
Aspen Alliance
WESTERN
ASPEN ALLIANCE is a joint venture between Utah State University’s
College of Natural Resources, USDI Bureau of Land Management,
and the USDA Forest Service Rocky Mountain Research Station and
National Forest Systems, whose purpose is to facilitate and coordinate
research issues related to quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides)
communities of the west. The Western
Aspen Alliance (WAA — pronounced “way”) will facilitate cooperative
research and disseminate state-of-the-science aspen information
to interested managers, researchers, the public, and other entities.
