Canadian Forests Homepage

Canadian Forests is a non-profit initiative on the Internet undertaken by John Roper, a forestry consultant based in Vancouver, British Columbia. The site is intended to facilitate access by Internet users to the growing number of sites that provide information on forests and forestry in Canada.

Canada's Forest Network

The web site for Canada's Forest Network provides a helpful guide to a wide range of information on Canadian forests and forest products available on the Internet. This includes hundreds of site descriptions and links as well as E-mail addresses. It is a source of information on Canadian forest products, services, organizations, events, issues, statistics, and publications. The site is a community initiative, whose primary sponsors are the Canadian Forest Service of Natural Resources Canada, Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada, Industry Canada, the Canadian Wood Council and the Canadian Pulp and Paper Association.

Canadian Forest Service

The Canadian Forest Service of Natural Resources Canada is the primary federal government agency concerned with forestry and forest science. It aims to promote the sustainable development of Canada's forests and the competitiveness of the Canadian forest sector for the well-being of present and future generations of Canadians. The website provides news about CFS and Canadian forestry, describes CFS science programs and activities, and lists available publications.

Alberta Forest Genetic Resources Council

The Alberta Forest Genetic Resources Council, advises the Minister of Sustainable Resource Development on matters relating to the role of genetics in the productivity, biodiversity and conservation of Alberta's tree species. The Council seeks to establish a solid foundation for the management of forest genetic resources in Alberta, including the operational delivery of tree improvement programs in the context of the principles of sustainable forest management.

Ministère des Ressources naturelles, de la Faune et des Parcs du Québec

Québec's forests make an important contribution to economic activity in the province. The site of the Ministère des Ressources naturelles, de la Faune et des Parcs du Québec explains how the forests are developed and managed to ensure sustainable development. The site contains data, information and reports that describe the research, development, management and protection activities in Québec's forests.

Saskatchewan Forest Centre

The Saskatchewan Forest Centre in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan is a federally- and provincially-supported partnership delivering forest information and technology transfer in Saskatchewan. The website includes information about the strategic plan for the Centre, its initial focus on agroforestry, value-added forest development, and fire/forest ecosystems, and on the Forest Development Fund which it administers.

International Poplar Commission

The International Poplar Commission is a subsidiary body of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. For over 50 years it has been promoting and coordinating the breeding, cultivation, management and utilization of poplars and willows. There are 36 member countries throughout the world. IPC meets every 4 years and Canada and the US hosted the last such meeting in 2000.

Canadian Institute of Forestry-Institut forestier du Canada

The Canadian Institute of Forestry-Institut forestier du Canada has been the national voice of forest practitioners since 1908. Its mission is to advance the stewardship of Canada's forest resources, provide national leadership in forestry, promote competence among forestry professionals, and foster public awareness of Canadian and international forestry issues.

Council of Quebec Forest Industries

The Council of Quebec Forest Industries represents 97% of the pulp and paper production in Quebec. The site contains information about the industry, as well as statistics, publications, news and educational games.

PlantWatch

'PlantWatch' is part of a national NatureWatch series of volunteer monitoring programs designed to help identify ecological changes that may be affecting our environment. A joint venture between Nature Canada, Environment Canada's Ecological Monitoring and Assessement Network Coordinating Office (EMAN CO) and the University of Guelph, PlantWatch enables "citizen scientist" to get involved by recording and reporting flowering times for selected species, including aspen poplar (Populus tremuloides L.) in their own area.

The Aspen Project

Trembling aspen is the most widely distributed tree species in North America. Despite its ability to adapt to disturbance, aspen is declining throughout much of its native range. The Aspen Project is a continuing research project at Oregon State University for the study of trembling aspen and its decline in the western United States.

Woodlot Association of Alberta

The Woodlot Association of Alberta represents woodlot owners, property owners, allied agencies and industrial operators in support of sustainable forestry management practices on public and private lands. Its website (www.woodlot.org) includes information for Alberta about timber and woodlot products wanted and for sale, as well as woodlot equipment, supplies and services.

World Wide Web Virtual Library of Forestry

The World Wide Web Virtual Library of Forestry site is part of the World Wide Web Virtual Library of subject oriented link collections. This forestry component is maintained by the Library Information Services and Information Systems Services at the Finnish Forest Research Institute in collaboration with BIOME/AgriFor in the UK. BIOME/AgriFor is the UK's gateway to high quality Internet resources in agriculture, food and forestry. There are two independent sub-sections:
