Canadian Forests Homepage

Canadian Forests is a private non-profit initiative on the Internet undertaken by Elizabeth Ruiz, editor, and John Roper, a forestry consultant based in Vancouver, British Columbia. The site is intended to facilitate access by Internet users to the growing number of sites that provide information on forests and forestry in Canada.

Canadian Forest Service

The Canadian Forest Service of Natural Resources Canada is the primary federal government agency concerned with forestry and forest science. It aims to promote the sustainable development of Canada's forests and the competitiveness of the Canadian forest sector for the well-being of present and future generations of Canadians. The website provides news about CFS and Canadian forestry, describes CFS science programs and activities, and lists available publications.

Clean Energy Fund

Through Canada's Economic Action Plan, the Government of Canada is taking action to ensure a healthy environment. The Clean Energy Fund, administered by Natural Resources Canada is investing in large-scale carbon capture and storage demonstration projects and smaller-scale demonstration projects of renewable and alternative energy technologies. The site provides details of projects funded under the program.

EcoENERGY Technology Initiative (ecoETI)

The Government of Canada's ecoENERGY Technology Initiative will help in the search for long-term solutions to reducing and eliminating air pollutants from energy production and use, and thus creating a clean energy future for Canada. The site provides details of projects funded under the program.

Canadian Biomass Information Network (CBIN)

The Canadian Biomass Innovation Network (CBIN) is a network of federal researchers, program managers, policy makers, and expert advisors partnered with industry, academia, non-governmental organizations, other government levels and the international community. The Network’s goal is to continually ensure the availability of knowledge, technology and enabling policy required to support the development of a sustainable Canadian bioeconomy. Alberta Forest Genetics Resources Council

The Alberta Forest Genetic Resources Council, advises the Minister of Sustainable Resource Development on matters relating to the role of genetics in the productivity, biodiversity and conservation of Alberta's tree species. The Council seeks to establish a solid foundation for the management of forest genetic resources in Alberta, including the operational delivery of tree improvement programs in the context of the principles of sustainable forest management.

Centre for Northern Agroforestry and Afforestation

The Vision of the Centre for Northern Agroforestry and Afforestation, is to advance a sustainable agroforestry industry that contributes to developing better communities, a growing economy and a healthier environment. Its website is designed to profile the research activities of its working group, and provide useful information for landowners, woodlot managers, forest management companies, government and research organizations.

Ministère des Ressources naturelles et de la Faune du Québec

Québec's forests make an important contribution to economic activity in the province. The site of the Ministère des Ressources naturelles et de la Faune du Québec explains how the forests are developed and managed to ensure sustainable development. The site contains data, information and reports that describe the research, development, management and protection activities in Québec's forests.

International Poplar Commission

The International Poplar Commission is a subsidiary body of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. For over 50 years it has been promoting and coordinating the breeding, cultivation, management and utilization of poplars and willows. There are 36 member countries throughout the world. IPC meets every 4 years and Canada and the US hosted the last such meeting in 2000.

Canadian Institute of Forestry-Institut forestier du Canada

The Canadian Institute of Forestry-Institut forestier du Canada has been the national voice of forest practitioners since 1908. Its mission is to advance the stewardship of Canada's forest resources, provide national leadership in forestry, promote competence among forestry professionals, and foster public awareness of Canadian and international forestry issues.

Council of Quebec Forest Industries

The Council of Quebec Forest Industries represents 97% of the pulp and paper production in Quebec. The site contains information about the industry, as well as statistics, publications, news and educational games.

PlantWatch

'PlantWatch' is part of a national NatureWatch series of volunteer monitoring programs designed to help identify ecological changes that may be affecting our environment. A joint venture between Nature Canada, Environment Canada's Ecological Monitoring and Assessement Network Coordinating Office (EMAN CO) and the University of Guelph, PlantWatch enables "citizen scientist" to get involved by recording and reporting flowering times for selected species, including aspen poplar (Populus tremuloides L.) in their own area.

The Aspen Project

Trembling aspen is the most widely distributed tree species in North America. Despite its ability to adapt to disturbance, aspen is declining throughout much of its native range. The Aspen Project is a continuing research project at Oregon State University for the study of trembling aspen and its decline in the western United States.

Western Aspen Alliance

WESTERN ASPEN ALLIANCE is a joint venture between Utah State University’s College of Natural Resources, USDI Bureau of Land Management, and the USDA Forest Service Rocky Mountain Research Station and National Forest Systems, whose purpose is to facilitate and coordinate research issues related to quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides) communities of the west. The Western Aspen Alliance (WAA — pronounced “way”) will facilitate cooperative research and disseminate state-of-the-science aspen information to interested managers, researchers, the public, and other entities.

Woodlot Association of Alberta

The Woodlot Association of Alberta represents woodlot owners, property owners, allied agencies and industrial operators in support of sustainable forestry management practices on public and private lands. Its website (www.woodlot.org) includes information for Alberta about timber and woodlot products wanted and for sale, as well as woodlot equipment, supplies and services.
