Environmental Applications of Poplar & Willow Working Party
Workshop Meeting

Montelibretti, Rome, Italy
17-18 September, 2010

This technical and business meeting will take place at the Institute of Agro-environmental and Forest Biology (IBAF) of the Italian National Research Council (CNR). The program will include technical presentations, discussion and field visits.

Topics to be presented include: Using willow riparian buffers for biomass production and riparian protection; Phyto-recurrent selection: a method for selecting Populus and Salix genotypes for environmental applications; Production of short rotation woody biomass with and without irrigation using treated municipal sewage water; and Root and shoot pruning of hybrid poplar for establishment on heavy clay soils.

IUFRO Fifth International Poplar Symposium (IPS-V)

Orvieto, Italy
20-25 September, 2010

This important meeting will be hosted by the Agricultural Research Council of Italy, the National Research Council of Italy-Institute of Agro-environmental and Forest Biology, The University of Tuscia, and the Italian National Poplar Commission. The conference committee directed by Giuseppe Scarascia-Mugnozza has been planning an exciting meeting.

The organization of IPS-V: "Poplars and willows: from research models to multipurpose trees for a biobased society" will include presentations of the latest scientific research in a diversity of topics including population genetics, application of genomics to conventional hybridization, host-pathogen interactions, novel biomass production systems, and field excursions to the Po River Valley to observe Italy's vibrant poplar culture and industry.

8th Biennial Meeting of Short Rotation Woody Crops Operations Working Group (including Poplar Council Annual Meeting 2010)

17-21 October, 2010

This meeting is hosted by the State University of New York willow biomass group. The theme is 'Short Rotation Woody Crops in a Renewable Energy Future: Challenges and Opportunities'. Poplar Council of Canada will hold its 2010 annual meeting in conjunction, on the evening of October 19. The meeting includes a day and a half of plenary and concurrent technical sessions, field visits in the Syracuse area, and an opening reception and evening banquet. As well, there is a 2-day post-conference field tour of biomass establishments, and poplar and willow plantations in Northern New York State and eastern Ontario. The post-conference tour includes options to end in Ottawa on the afternoon of October 21, or return by bus to Syracuse.

GETTING TO SYRACUSE: For the benefit of anyone wishing to travel to the conference in Syracuse via Ottawa, van transportation is being arranged, leaving Ottawa Airport on the afternoon of Sunday October 17 and returning there Thursday afternoon October 21 following the field tour. Salicaceae Symposium / Jornadas de Salicaceas

This is the 5th in a series of events related to poplars and willows organized in Argentina since the International Poplar Commission held its 22nd Session in Chile and Argentina in 2006. The program includes invited and volunteer presentations on the significant role of poplars and willows from a biological, environmental and an economic perspective, as well as technical tours illustrating poplar and willow production and industry in the south of Argentina.

Poplar Council of Canada Annual Meeting 2009

'Poplar and Willow - Challenge and Change'

September 28-30, 2009
The meeting included two half-day technical sessions September 28 (pm) and 30 (am) at The Regina Inn, a full-day field tour September 29 to the AAFC Shelterbelt Centre, Indian Head, SK, as well as optional post-conference field visits September 30 (pm) and October 1. See program for details. The PCC Annual Business Meeting took place on the evening of September 28.

Hosted by Agriculture & Agri-Food Canada's Agroforestry Division in partnership with the Poplar Council of Canada.

Short Rotation Crops International Conference

Minneapolis, Minnesota
August 18-22, 2008
The theme of this meeting was 'Biofuels, Bioenergy, and Bioproducts from Sustainable Agricultural and Forest Crops'. It included technical sessions with oral presentations and posters, as well as a variety of field tours. The goal was to initiate and provide opportunities for scientific exchange and full integration of the science and application of producing both agricultural and forest crops for biofuels, bioenergy and bioproducts.
Sponsors included USDA Forest Service, USDA Agricultural Research Service, University of Minnesota, Short Rotation Woody Crops Operations Working Group, Poplar Council of Canada, Poplar Council of the US, IEA Bioenergy Task 30, IUFRO, Soil and Water Conservation Society, and others.
The Conference incorporated the 2008 Annual Meeting of the Poplar Council of Canada.

The conference website (www.cinram.umn.edu/srwc/) is still providing information about the event, and and has a variety of conference materials available. These include:

International Poplar Commission, 23rd Session

The theme of IPC-2008 was 'Poplars, Willows and People's Wellbeing'. It will include:

- recent status and advances of poplar and willow afforestation and reforesetation for industry applications;
- recent status, progress and advances in application of poplars and willows for ecological/environmental restoration, biofuels (bioenergy) and carbon sinks to mitigate climate change; and
- advances in poplar breeding, biotechnology and forest health.
The program included plenary, concurrent and Working Party Sessions, Pre- and Post-Session study tours, and IPC Executive Committee meetings, as well as a tour of Beijing City and the Olympic Stadium
