Upcoming Events
IUFRO Fifth International
Poplar Symposium (IPS-V)
Orvieto, Italy
20-25 September, 2010
This important meeting will be hosted by the Agricultural
Research Council of Italy, the National Research Council of Italy-Institute
of Agro-environmental and Forest Biology, The University of Tuscia,
and the Italian National Poplar Commission. The conference committee
directed by Giuseppe Scarascia-Mugnozza has been planning an exciting
meeting.
The organization of IPS-V: "Poplars and willows:
from research models to multipurpose trees for a biobased society"
will include presentations of the latest scientific research in
a diversity of topics including population genetics, application
of genomics to conventional hybridization, host-pathogen interactions,
novel biomass production systems, and field excursions to the
Po River Valley to observe Italy's vibrant poplar culture and
industry.

Short Rotation Woody Crops
Operations Working Group (including Poplar Council Annual Meeting
2010)
Syracuse, NY
18-21 October, 2010
This meeting will be hosted by the State University
of New York willow biomass group in Syracuse. Poplar Council of
Canada will hold its 2010 annual meeting in conjunction. The meeting
will include field visits in the Syracuse area, as well as a 2-day
field tour of poplar and willow plantations and trials in eastern
Ontario (Kingston - Kemptville - Ottawa).

2009
'Poplar and Willow - Challenge and Change'
Regina, Saskatchewan
September 28-30, 2009
The meeting included two half-day technical sessions September
28 (pm) and 30 (am) at The Regina Inn, a full-day field tour September
29 to the AAFC Shelterbelt Centre, Indian Head, SK, as well as
optional post-conference field visits September 30 (pm) and October
1. See program for details.
The PCC Annual Business Meeting took place on the evening of September
28.
Hosted by Agriculture & Agri-Food Canada's
Agroforestry Division in partnership with the Poplar Council of
Canada.

Short
Rotation Crops International Conference
Minneapolis, Minnesota
August 18-22, 2008
The theme of this meeting was 'Biofuels, Bioenergy, and Bioproducts
from Sustainable Agricultural and Forest Crops'. It included technical
sessions with oral presentations and posters, as well as a variety
of field tours. The goal was to initiate and provide opportunities
for scientific exchange and full integration of the science and
application of producing both agricultural and forest crops for
biofuels, bioenergy and bioproducts.
Sponsors included USDA Forest Service, USDA Agricultural Research
Service, University of Minnesota, Short Rotation Woody Crops Operations
Working Group, Poplar Council of Canada, Poplar Council of the
US, IEA Bioenergy Task 30, IUFRO, Soil and Water Conservation
Society, and others.
The Conference incorporated the 2008 Annual Meeting of the
Poplar Council of Canada.

is still providing information about the event, and and has a

The theme of IPC-2008 was 'Poplars, Willows and People's Wellbeing'.
It will include:
- recent status and advances of poplar and
willow afforestation and reforesetation for industry applications;
- recent status, progress and advances in application of poplars
and willows for ecological/environmental restoration, biofuels
(bioenergy) and carbon sinks to mitigate climate change; and
- advances in poplar breeding, biotechnology and forest health.
The program included plenary, concurrent and Working Party Sessions,
Pre- and Post-Session study tours, and IPC Executive Committee
meetings, as well as a tour of Beijing City and the Olympic Stadium
