Special
Journal Issue on Canadian Poplar Research

ANNOUNCEMENT
Janice Cooke of the University of Alberta and Stewart
Rood of the University of Lethbridge announced in 2006 an initiative
to develop a special issue of the Canadian Journal of Botany devoted
to research being conducted in Canada on poplar. The Canadian
Journal of Botany is a scientific journal published by the
National Research Council of Canada with with a wide circulation
and strong reputation within Canada and internationally. (With
the January 2008 issue, the journal appeared with a new title:
'Botany'.) The goal of this special issue was to showcase the
breadth and depth of poplar research being conducted in Canada.
In fact, the invitation was so well received by
researchers that the resulting papers, after peer review, were
enough to fill two issues of the journal. These can be viewed
on-line at http://pubs.nrc-cnrc.gc.ca/rp-ps/issueDetail.jsp?jcode=cjb&lang=eng&vol=85&is=11
(November 2007) and http://pubs.nrc-cnrc.gc.ca/rp-ps/issueDetail.jsp?jcode=cjb&lang=eng&vol=85&is=12
(December 2007). In all, 21 papers were published covering a wide
range of topics including cell and molecular biology, physiology
and biochemistry, ecology, genetics, mycology and plant-microbe
interactions, and structure and development.
The Poplar Council supported this initiative and
members contributed to a mini-review article on the history of
poplar research in Canada, which is included in the December 2007
issue.
