Rhinelander, Wisconsin, is the place to be in July 2018 for anyone interested in growing and using poplars, willows and other short rotation woody crops. Nicolet College in Rhinelander will be the venue for an important international conference on 'Woody Crops 2018'. The Short Rotation Woody Crops Operations Working Group of the USA is the lead organization for the conference, along with the Poplar and Willow Council of Canada which will hold its annual meeting in conjunction with the conference. Other participating groups are two different Working Parties of the International Union of Forestry Research Organizations (IUFRO): 2.06.04 on Physiology and Genetics of Poplars and Willows, and 1.03.00 on Short Rotation Forestry; IEA Bioenergy Task 43 'Biomass Feedstocks for Energy Markets'; and the International Poplar Commission's Working Party on Environmental and Ecosystem Services.
The conference itself runs from July 23 to July 25 in Rhinelander and features a number of international plenary speakers, including PWCC's own Barb Thomas of Edmonton, Jud Isebrands of the USA, Joris van Acker of Belgium, Biljana Kulišic of Croatia and Andrej Pilipovic of Serbia. A two-day field tour of poplar trials in north-east Minnesota July 22-23, with an overnight stop in Duluth, immediately precedes the conference. Following the event, participants have the option of joining a two-day post-conference field tour July 25-27 in Wisconsin, with overnights in Green Bay and Milwaukee, and ending in Milwaukee.

These should relate to conference topics, which include ecosystem servgices, phytotechnologies, biomass production, genetics & physiology, harvesting & logistics, social factors & policy issues, and wood products & conversion. Accepted abstracts will be compiled and published in a conference report in a Special Issue of the on-line Open Access journal 'Forests'. In addition, manuscripts related to poster or oral presentations may be submitted for peer-reviewed publication in the Special Issue of 'Forests'. More information.
